Yoga Practice: Week 2

For this weeks Yoga practice, I had to look up a you-tube video because I had no time to attend an actual class. I watched a video called "45 Minute Beginner Full Body Yoga Flow At Home" by a yogi called Flow. This video was CHALLENGING. We started out in hero's pose and just analyzed the body and controlled our breathing. My ankles were feeling it during this pose, but I can say that i felt very relaxed. I have taken meditation classes before, so the breathing and body analyzing was pretty easy for me.
We then went into a pretty simple flow routine consisting of basic poses that helped develop body awareness and strength. I started sweating after the first pose, so it was pretty difficult to push through. Some of the poses really pointed out weaknesses in my body, like I never knew how weak my hamstrings and glut's were until after this practice. Halfway through the practice, I started to feel a sense of relief in my lower back. I always had low back pain because of sports and I thought it was just normal for me. It turns out that my ass wasn't working properly, throwing my spine out of place a little.
The end of the practice was my favorite part. We lied on our backs, knees bent, arms out to the side with our palms facing upwards, and just focused on breathing in through the nose and out through the nose. It is pretty amazing to feel your natural breath. I was so relaxed during this pose, I almost fell asleep. It felt almost as if all of my thoughts just disappeared and I was completely still. I felt 100x better after doing this practice.
I think it is really important, for anybody staring out with yoga, to really get rid of your expectations. Yoga is different for everybody and not everyone can do what some people can. There is no right or wrong way to do yoga, you just have to put in all of your effort into the practice in order to achieve the full benefit. Getting rid of expectations, to me, is what really creates a sacred space for you to do your practice. This place could be anywhere, but it is best to do it in a spot that makes you feel comfortable and at ease.
can you speak to how the instructor (and you) create a "sacred" space?
